We have been granted access to this site for 2 sessions to look at the breeding & trialling process first hand.
There will be a visit to the trials site as well as a talk by some of the KWS staff and lunch will be provided.
BASIS & NRoSO points are applied for.
The KWS.pdf, or Product Development Field, is a six hectare site close to the KWS UK offices in Thriplow. As a
single site for the experimentation and demonstration of the UK crop portfolio, we hope to provide visitors
with an insight into the breeding and trialling process prior to a variety going onto farm. Uniquely, the field will
be in operation for at least four years so that the four crop species may be grown in complete rotation to
simulate typical field situations.
In 2009/10, we have a total of 16 trials covering all crops. We have two sowing dates for oilseed rape as well
as a seed treatment trial. For maize we will be drilling Bioenergy varieties and for sugar beet we will be drilling
our main portfolio as well as some up-and-coming varieties. We will have large cereal demonstration blocks of
wheat and barley as well as a yellow rust trial, a lodging demonstration and a trial testing new spraying
technology. In addition to this, we are testing milling wheat varieties with various doses of Nitrogen to test
their ability to develop high levels of protein from N applications.
